Daily writing prompt
What’s a skill you consider basic, that most people don’t actually know how to do?
I have three. Which, honestly, doesn’t matter much – they aren’t used as often as they once were.
- Writing in cursive.
- Telling time on an anolog clock.
- Writing a check.
Let’s break this down.
- Writing in cursive hasn’t been taught a lot longer than I remember. My Husband can’t read or write cursive – we are the same age (38). I honestly thought everyone born in the 80’s were taught – I was taught. Apparently, depending on the school & location you attended/lived, you didn’t learn. I went to school (when I was learning to write cursive) in a small town – Google Dickson, Oklahoma. The school is a tad larger than it was when I attended, but I learned cursive. Husband attended school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
- No one uses analog clocks. My Fitbit Watch is digital. Cell phones are digital. The clock on the computer I’m typing on is digital. But honestly, I feel like people should be able to read an analog clock. Most office buildings have analog clocks. My work has analog on the walls. But this would also be wound up in “people should be able to tell military time”. I was taught to read analog clocks – but not military time. Husband taught me that after he started working at the same job as me. His side deals with military time, mine not so much. But I did learn it. Am I a pro? Absolutely not. I will still pause & have to think about it. But give me an analog clock!
- People don’t use checks anymore. Except my elders. But most companies won’t take checks. They just require your bank routing number and account number. Personally, I wish they’d let me use a debit card for most of those transactions. I hate waiting for the routing/account number to go through. I might as well use a check as long as it takes.
